3.4.4 Concept of Mobile Operating System

Over the past decade, mobile devices such as mobile phones, smart phones, PDAs, tablet computers have taken the world by storm. These mobile devices are having a significant impact on our lives. This is due to not only the hardware and size of mobile but also the specialized software that these devices run- most importantly, their operating systems.

Most people do not go to their local wireless store and ask for a particular operating system. Generally, they ask for an iPhone, an Android, a Windows phone, or a handful of other options. But secretly, it's the operating system that most people prefer.

As you know, operating system is a collection of system software, which used to run any programs or application software in a computer. It is a platform to run any programs in computer. Like the operating system in personal computer, a mobile operating system, often called a mobile OS for short, is an operating system that runs only on mobile devices. In other words, mobile operating system is an operating system that is specifically designed to run on mobile devices such as mobile phones, smart phones, PDAs, tablet computers and other handheld devices.

The operating system is responsible for determining the functions and features available on your device, such as touch screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS mobile operating system, camera, video camera, speech recognition, voice recorder, music player, near field communication, keyboards, WAP, email, text messaging, and many more. The mobile OS will also determine which third-party applications (mobile apps) can be used on your device. A mobile OS is similar to a standard OS (like Windows, Linux, and Mac) but is relatively simple and light and primarily manages the wireless variations of local and broadband connections, mobile multimedia and various input methods.

Popular mobile operating systems are Android, IOS, BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile.

3.4.5 Type of Mobile Operating System

There are numerous mobile device operating systems available today. When you purchase a mobile device, the manufacturer will have chosen the operating system for that specific device. For that reason, before you purchase a device, you will want to learn abo mobile operating system to ensure compatibility and support for the mobile application you want to use.

There is a variety of both, Mobile OS and the Mobile application platforms in mobile with a few names enjoying most of the market share. Here's a mobile operating system

1. Android OS (Google Inc.)

Android, an open-source mobile operating system, is developed by Google based on Linux platform. Open source means unlimited access to any anyone who wants to develop apps for the phone and places very little restriction on its licensing.

Some of the best features of Android:

·         Android operating system includes the ability to customize multiple home screens with useful widgets and apps.

·         It gives you quicker and easier access to the content and functions you most ca about. It also has an excellent capacity for multitasking - with the ability to close programs simply swiping them away.

·         Last but not the least, the Android Market, which is the Android equivalent of the Apple App Store, is home to millions of apps many of which are completely free. Most Android devices allow electronic devices to easily interact across short distances Android supports multiple keyboards making them easy to install; the Swift Key, Skype, and 8pen apps all offer ways to quickly change up your keyboard style.

·         The Android operating system supports a built-in infrared transmitter, allowing you to use your phone or tablet as a remote control.

·         Android phones also have unique hardware capabilities. Google's OS makes it possible to remove and upgrade your battery or to replace one that no longer holds a charge.

·         Android operating system is an open source; developers can build their own versions. which users can download and install in place of the stock OS.

2. iPhone OS/iOS (Apple)

iOS and Apple's Mac OS X operating system, both belongs to the Unix-like operating system. Originally, this system was called iPhone OS which derived from Mac OS X

Now, the mobile operating system is referred to as iOS and is supported on a number of Apple devices including the iPhone, iPad, iPad 2 and iPod Touch.

3. Windows Mobile (Windows Phone)

Windows Mobile OS or Windows Phone (abbreviated as WP) is a kind of mobile operating systems. It was developed by Microsoft in late 2010, after iOS and Android operating system. Windows Mobile is Microsoft's mobile operating system used in smart phones and mobile devices with or without touch screens. The Mobile OS is based on the Windows CE 5.2 kernel.

Features of Windows Mobile (Windows Phone)

·         Windows Mobile (Windows Phone) is multitasking operating system. It also has aggregators called 'hubs' that group together many applications.

·         It stores photos and music into one library, meaning your Facebook photos can be found with your camera photos and your documents from different sources grouped together in one, easy to access location.

·         Windows Phone comes with a mobile-optimized version of the Internet Explorer for accessing the web, and Exchange, which supports secure with push support. corporate e-mail accounts

 

4. BlackBerry OS (Research in Motion)

BlackBerry OS is the one designed for BlackBerry devices, common among business users. It is a proprietary mobile operating system developed by Research In Motion. The BlackBerry platform is popular with corporate users as it offers synchronization Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, Novell GroupWise email and other business software when used with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Features of BlackBerry OS (Research in Motion)

·         The BlackBerry operating system is well-liked for its enhanced security and safety measures. It was the phone of choice for former President Barack Obama!

·         The Blackberry operating system provides multitasking facility.

·         It supports specialized input devices that have been adopted by RIM (Research Motion) for use in its handhelds, particularly the track wheel, trackball, and recently, the track pad and touch screen.

·         The operating system also supports WAP 1.2. Recently, it has seen a surge in third party applications and has been improved to offer full multimedia support.

 

5. Symbian OS (Nokia)

Symbian is a closed source mobile operating system which was originally developed for PDAs in 1998 by the Symbian Ltd. It has been used by many major handset manufacturers, including BenQ, Fujitsu, LG, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, Sharp, and Sony Ericsson. Nokia became the largest shareholder of Symbian Ltd. in 2004 and purchased the entire company in 2008. Nokia has made the Symbian platform available under an alternative, open and direct model, to work with some OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and the small community of platform development collaborators.

Features of Symbian OS (Nokia)

·         Symbian targeted at mobile phones that offer high-level of integration with communication and personal information management functionality.

·         It is flexible and multi-tasking.

·         It is good for security.

·         Symbian OS contained a browser, messaging, multimedia, communication proto mobile telephony, data synchronization, application environment and robustness.

·         Symbian OS provides open platform to enable independent technology and software vendors to develop third party app.

·         It allowed impressive battery life. But Symbian OS is dependent on Nokia.

·         The major drawback of Symbian os is that it provided late response as compared to IOS and Android. In 2014, Nokia broke its all ties with Symbian.
